Nurses weigh in on problem in national survey

Workplace injuries resulting from hospital violence are on the decline at Scripps Health, thanks to a series of efforts to curtail the problem both within Scripps and throughout the community, Scripps President and CEO told KPBS during a recent interview.

The station also reported on a national survey that found 85% of nurses who responded experienced at least one form of workplace violence in the past year.

Van Gorder said the problem is much bigger than any single healthcare provider and requires continued cooperation among hospitals, law enforcement, prosecutors and law makers.

Van Gorder and Scripps have been at the forefront of efforts to address hospital violence in recent years, such as creation of a regional task force and support for increasing the penalty for assaulting emergency department staff and employees.
