Trauma surgeon, Scripps leader leaves a lifesaving legacy

Multiple media outlets published remembrances of A. Brent Eastman, MD, following the passing of the longtime Scripps Health trauma surgeon and chief medical officer. Dr. Eastman was a principal pioneer of the trauma system in San Diego, which helped reduce the region’s rate of preventable trauma deaths from 21% to less than 1% and served as a model adopted nationally and worldwide.

As chief medical officer at Scripps, Dr. Eastman led the way in quality, patient safety and physician engagement. Working with Scripps Health President and CEO Chris Van Gorder, he provided guidance in disaster preparedness and emergency response. Before retiring from Scripps, Dr. Eastman was elected as the 93rd president of the American College of Surgeons, one of the highest honors in American surgery.
