Scripps Expert Provides Insight About New West Nile Virus Cases

With four human cases of West Nile virus infection reported in San Diego County this summer, people in the region should take steps to avoid contact with the mosquitoes that carry and spread the infection, Scripps Health Senior Director of Microbiology and Infectious Disease Ian McHardy, PhD, said during a recent media interview. 

While most people infected with the virus don’t experience symptoms, a very small number of people can develop a potentially dangerous form of meningitis when the virus spreads to the brain or spinal cord, McHardy said. Older people and those with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable. 

He encouraged people to eliminate standing water around their homes, apply mosquito repellent when outside, and wear long sleeves and long pants to avoid bites.
