Jonathan Fisher, MD, is an expert in liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation surgery. In addition, he provides expert surgical treatment for both cancers and benign diseases of the pancreas, liver, gallbladder, bile duct and spleen, as well as complex abdominal problems.
Dr. Fisher is the division head of the Scripps Center for Organ Transplantation. He has performed research ranging from clinical trials using new immunosuppressive drug regimens in liver, pancreas and kidney transplants to state-of-the-art methods for monitoring organ transplant function and early identification and treatment of organ rejection. He has also published widely in transplantation, from peer-reviewed journal articles on new surgical techniques to the ethics underlying organ transplantation.
Dr. Fisher takes a holistic approach to patient care and seeks to apply integrative medicine to the care of transplant and complex surgical patients. He firmly believes all patient care must be placed in context of the goals of each individual patient and that a strong patient-physician relationship is required to provide the best care.
He is a member of numerous societies including the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association, and the American and International Liver Transplant Societies. He has served on United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) national committees for kidney transplantation, pancreas transplantation and organ allocation, as well as local organ procurement organization committees.
Within Scripps, he is the chair of the Scripps Clinic Medical Group Health and Wellness Committee, working to help his fellow physicians to manage burnout and promote physician well-being. He is also chair of one of the quality review committees at Scripps Green Hospital as well as a member of its pharmacy and therapeutics committee.
When he is not taking care of patients, Dr. Fisher enjoys spending time with his wife, chasing after his two young children, mountain biking, hiking and reading.
