Matthew Schultzel, DO, specializes in general surgery, as well as minimally invasive colon and rectal surgery. His areas of interest include endoscopic surgery, single-incision laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, as well as transanal video assisted surgery for benign tumors unable to be retrieved via colonoscopy. Dr. Schultzel is also experienced in the use of advanced laparoscopic methods in order to reduce post-operative complications, hernias and pain. He has conducted hundreds of colon and rectal surgeries and is an instructor for advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery, focusing on the single-incision approach.
Dr. Schultzel is an expert in advanced cancer therapies for colon cancer and rectal cancer. He is one of the few surgeons in the nation performing TaTME (transanal total mesorectal excision), and is fellowship trained in the use of single-site laparoscopic surgery (SILS), transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) and single-site robotic surgery. He also performs general surgical procedures using the robot, including hernia repair and cholecystectomy.
A member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), as well as the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), Dr. Schultzel has specialty training to care for people suffering from inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
