Scripps Clinic neurologist J.Steven Poceta, MD, has been sworn in as the 129th president of the San Diego County Medical Society (SDCMS). Dr. Poceta was elected to the role for a one-year term by the organization’s nearly 3,000 physician members.

“It is an honor to be a part of such an esteemed organization and to continue working for the health of San Diego,” said Dr. Poceta. “I am proud to help SDCMS continue to aid physicians in what they have trained to do for years: treat patients, relieve suffering and cure disease.”

Dr. Poceta is a neurologist and sleep medicine specialist at Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines with a focus on neurologic sleep disorders such as restless leg syndrome, sleep walking and narcolepsy. He also diagnoses and treats general neurologic conditions such as insomnia and headache.

This year’s White Coat Gala was held on June 14 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. The annual event marks the beginning of the new president’s term and acknowledges the outgoing president. The event also honors the work of the SDCMS Foundation.

“The physicians of the San Diego County Medical Society have a long and proud history of leading the charge to ensure access to quality health care for all San Diegans,” said Tom Gehring, SDCMS chief executive officer and executive director. “Dr. Poceta, our first president from Scripps Clinic, will in that role work tirelessly for our physician community so that San Diego’s physicians can focus on their patients.”
