Scripps La Jolla, Green and Mercy hospitals recognized for high performance

U.S. News & World Report’s annual “Best Hospitals” issue lists Scripps Health among the best in the nation. The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 26th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating patients with the most challenging health care needs. Scripps was ranked in the top 20 nationally for heart care, gynecology and diabetes.

The combined programs of Scripps Green Hospital and Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla – listed as “Scripps La Jolla Hospitals and Clinics” – are ranked among the nation’s top hospitals in eight categories:

  • Diabetes and Endocrinology (No. 13)
  • Gynecology (No. 14)
  • Cardiology and Heart Surgery (No. 19)
  • Pulmonology (No. 22)
  • Orthopedics (No. 23)
  • Geriatrics (No. 31)
  • Gastroenterology and GI Surgery (No. 35)
  • Ears, Nose, and Throat (No. 37)

And Scripps Mercy Hospital (San Diego and Chula Vista) is ranked No. 42 in the nation in diabetes and endocrinology.

“These rankings are a testament to the extraordinary care that our physicians and staff provide to our patients every day,” said Chris Van Gorder, Scripps president and CEO. “This is more evidence that we are succeeding in our efforts to respond to the changing health care environment while improving Scripps’ already high quality care.”

This is the 11th year the Scripps heart program has made the national ranking. Scripps has the region’s only cardiovascular program consistently recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best in the country. More than 76,000 patients receive their cardiovascular care from Scripps, making it San Diego County’s largest heart care provider.

In March, Scripps opened the Prebys Cardiovascular Institute, which brings together top researchers, physicians and staff while incorporating leading-edge wireless technologies and individualized medicine for the best in patient care.

Scripps’ diabetes and endocrinology programs provide the best evidence-based diabetes screening, education and patient care. The Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute oversees one of the largest American Diabetes Association-recognized diabetes education programs in the nation and is home to Project Dulce, an award-winning diabetes care and education program that addresses the specific needs of culturally diverse populations.

Scripps gynecology services offer women a full spectrum of care for reproductive health as well as treatment for a variety of cancers and pelvic floor disorders, and using state-of-the-art equipment for minimally invasive robotic surgery.

For the annual Best Hospitals rankings, U.S. News evaluates hospitals in 16 adult specialties. In most specialties, it ranks the nation’s top 50 hospitals and also recognizes other high-performing hospitals that scored among the top 10 percent of hospitals that received scores.

Methodology

U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition or added risk because of other health problems or age. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, the adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties. The specialty rankings and data were produced for U.S. News by RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Using the same data, U.S. News produced the state and metro rankings.

The rankings have been published at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals and will appear in print in the U.S. News Best Hospitals guidebook, available in bookstores and on newsstands in September.
