Experimental treatment would be major improvement over current daily shots

Endocrinologist and Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute Corporate Vice President Athena Philis-Tsimikas, MD, recently delivered the results of a pivotal clinical trial that showed an experimental weekly insulin shot worked just as good as conventional daily injections to manage blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

Her presentation came during the 85th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association held in Chicago. Results of the multi-national phase 3 study were published simultaneously in the medical journal The Lancet.

Significantly reducing the frequency of shots will make life easier for people who rely on the treatment to control their diabetes, she said.

The company that makes the weekly insulin, Eli Lilly, is expected to seek FDA approval later this year for sale of the drug in the United States.
