An experimental procedure being tested to treat some heart failure patients at Scripps was recently featured in a 10News report about the ongoing clinical trial.

Scripps Clinic cardiologist Rajeev Mohan, MD, said the atrial shunt device opens a small hole between the top two chambers of the heart to relieve pressure and hopefully reduce symptoms in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, more commonly known as HFpEF.

Patient Amy Vasquez, who received the device during an earlier clinical trial at Scripps, said the procedure has allowed her to return to the more active life she had before developing heart failure symptoms.
