Patient suffered sudden cardiac arrest after finishing the race

Christina Morcos, a cardiology nurse practitioner at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, had just finished running a weekend 10K race when she noticed a woman collapsing near the finish line.

She quickly determined the other runner, Kim Stevens, had suffered sudden cardiac arrest and began administering CPR and shock from a portable defibrillator.

After Stevens was rushed to Scripps La Jolla’s trauma center, Morcos ended up being part of her inpatient care team. And once Stevens was out of the hospital, she chose Morcos’ husband Peter Morcos, MD, who happens to be a Scripps Clinic physician, as her new cardiologist.

CBS8 reporter Jeff Zevely recently reported on this remarkable and inspiring tale of people being in the right place at the right time to save a life.
