Earlier screening and treatment could cut heart attacks and strokes in half

Leading medical organizations, including the American College of Cardiology, recently adopted new guidelines for dealing with high cholesterol that start screenings as early as 10 years old and treatments as early as the age of 30.

Scripps Clinic cardiologist Elizabeth Epstein, MD, discussed what these changes mean, especially for younger people and their long term heart health, during an interview with Fox 5 TV.

“We’re shifting to upstream risk and looking at preventing (heart) disease even 30 years down the line,” she said.
