San Diego Magazine recently published a profile story on Melody Thomas in its annual “Top Doctors” edition that focuses on local hospitals and health systems. Thomas was included among a group of local unsung heroes who improve patients’ lives from behind the scenes.

Thomas leads the social services, case management and rehab services teams at Scripps Mercy Hospital, ensuring that all patients have the various resources they need for a successful recovery after being discharged from the hospital.

Thomas said one of her team’s biggest challenges comes with serving patients on what are called “avoidable bed days.” These are days when an admitted patient is medically cleared to be leave the hospital but instead must remain there by law – for weeks, months and sometimes years – because there is no safe plan to discharge them.
