Gary G. Fybel, FACHE
Chief Executive, Senior Vice President, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla
Gary Fybel has served as a senior vice president of Scripps and the chief executive of Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla since 2000. Under his leadership, Scripps La Jolla has received two of the highest honors in health care – Magnet Designation for Nursing Excellence and the Truven Health Analytics Everest Award, for those hospitals that demonstrated five consecutive years of improvement and are rated among the 100 top hospitals in the nation. Scripps La Jolla is also accredited by The Joint Commission as one of only 113 Comprehensive Stroke Centers in America.
Fybel has been a health care executive for more than 35 years. For 12 years, he served as administrator of the Mission Regional Medical Center in Orange County, a part of the St. Joseph Health System. In 1999 he served as the interim president/CEO of the St. Joseph Hospitals in Humboldt County. In 2000, his hospital received The Joint Commission’s Ernest A. Codman Quality Award, one of The Joint Commission’s highest recognitions.
Fybel is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the College’s past regent for San Diego and Imperial Counties. He is also the recipient of the ACHE Regent’s Senior Healthcare Leader award. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Management/Health Services Administration and a Master of Business Administration from California State University, Long Beach.
