Includes On-Demand video visits with primary care doctor
Scripps patients now have more convenient ways to connect with the care they need thanks to new digital health tools.
These online health services include on-demand video visits with primary care physicians and real-time wait time updates for same-day visits at Scripps locations for emergency care, urgent care, walk-in clinics and lab services. Patients can also let staff know when they're on their way and complete part of the check-in process before arriving.
These digital patient tools build on the success of virtual care and telemedicine services that became essential during the pandemic.
In addition, patients can now schedule appointments online with a growing network of participating physicians, as Scripps continues to expand digital care access across its health system.
“Digital health is giving patients more control and easier access to care,” says David Wetherhold, MD, chief medical information officer, ambulatory systems at Scripps Health and an internal medicine physician at Scripps Clinic Anderson Medical Pavilion in La Jolla. “At Scripps, patients are embracing new technologies like video visits and patient portals, which are helping make care more convenient, connected and personalized.”
A central part of this transformation is the MyScripps online patient portal and mobile app, which serves as the gateway to Scripps’ digital health offerings. Through MyScripps, patients can schedule appointments, request video visits, view test results, check wait times and securely message their care teams — all from any device, at any time.
On-Demand video visits with primary care doctors
Scripps is redefining convenience in health care with On-Demand Video Visits, allowing patients to connect with a primary care physician from their phone or computer — often with wait times under 10 minutes. This virtual care option eliminates the need for in-person travel while maintaining high-quality care.
Previously limited to Scripps HealthExpress and select specialists, On-Demand Video Visits are now available to Scripps Clinic and Scripps Coastal Medical Center primary care patients. Access is simple through the MyScripps patient portal, where patients can request same-day video visits without an appointment.
During each visit, providers can securely access your electronic health records (EHRs), ensuring accurate diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care.
How On-Demand video visits work
Log in to the MyScripps patient portal, follow the prompts and request a same-day On-Demand Video Visit. You’ll be matched with a provider, which could be a doctor, nurse practitioner or physician assistant.
“The doctor you see may not be your primary physician, but any Scripps physician will have access to your records and will be able to help,” says Dr. Wetherhold. “At times, there could be a hundred or more physicians on demand. And when someone signs into the queue, they can see any of those doctors.”
Real-time wait times at Scripps locations
Patients can now check real-time wait times for all Scripps HealthExpress walk-in clinics for minor illnesses and injuries, urgent care centers, emergency rooms and lab service sites. Patients can choose the most convenient location and time for their visit.
On My Way: Virtual check in
Patients can use On My Way to find the nearest Scripps location for emergency care, urgent care, walk-in clinic or lab service visit, to complete part of the check-in process in advance and also notify staff that they are on their way.
“Wait times can be unpredictable if you don’t use On My Way,” says Dr. Wetherhold. “These tools give you a clearer idea of what to expect before you arrive, helping you plan your visit more efficiently.”
Online scheduling: Convenience at your fingertips
Online appointment scheduling has become a central part of patient-centered care in modern health systems.
At Scripps, patients can schedule in-office appointments and video visits with more than 100 primary care physicians online using their desktop, table or mobile phone.
“More appointments are available to self-schedule than ever, and we continue to expand,” Dr. Wetherhold says.
Patients can book online with most primary care physicians. Online scheduling is also planned to expand to a growing network of Scripps specialists, including experts in infectious disease, podiatry, ophthalmology, optometry, urology, endocrinology, cardiology and nutrition.
Through the MyScripps patient portal or the Scripps website, (scripps.org) patients can easily view available appointment times, schedule visits and manage their care, without the need for phone calls or long wait times.
The Fastpass automated waitlist notifies patients when earlier appointments become available, giving them the option to book sooner.
Patients can also confirm, cancel or reschedule appointments quickly using optional text messaging reminders for added convenience.
Patient portal experience: Secure access to your health information
Security is at the core of the MyScripps patient portal, which serves as a trusted gateway to your personal health information.
Designed with privacy in mind, MyScripps uses technology that complies with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and incorporates industry-standard encryption to ensure sensitive medical data remains protected.
Patients can confidently manage their health online — whether viewing test results, requesting prescription refills or messaging their care team — knowing their information is secure.
Beyond security, MyScripps offers patients greater convenience and control. With 24/7 access from any device, they can stay informed, track their health progress and make confident, informed decisions — whether at home or on the go.
Commitment to all patients
While digital tools offer flexibility and speed, Scripps remains committed to serving every patient, regardless of their comfort level with technology. In-person visits and phone scheduling continue to be available for those who prefer traditional care methods.
“Patients are loving telehealth, but in-person options are not going away,” says Dr. Wetherhold. “We always enjoy seeing people face-to-face.”
This balanced approach ensures that Scripps’ digital advancements enhance access without leaving anyone behind — making health care more inclusive, responsive and patient-focused.
