Biography

Shane Mesko, MD, is a radiation oncologist who works closely with a multidisciplinary team of expert medical oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, dosimetrists and physicists to provide the highest level of care for his patients. He specializes in thoracic cancers (lung, esophageal), genitourinary cancers (prostate, bladder, kidney), head and neck cancers, central nervous system cancers (brain, spine), musculoskeletal cancers (sarcoma), and hematological cancers (lymphoma, myeloma).

Dr. Mesko has expertise in using state-of-the-art radiation techniques, including intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), proton therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) to delivery millimeter-accurate treatment that precisely matches the tumor shape.

When it comes to patient care, Dr. Mesko takes the time to get to know every one of his patients and to design a personalized treatment plan that is unique to each of them. He is constantly reviewing the current clinical trials and literature to ensure his patients receive the latest evidence-based treatment that incorporates the optimal combination of radiation, surgery, chemotherapy and/or immunotherapy. Developing a long-term relationship with his patients and their families is his priority.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Mesko is an active researcher and remains highly involved in the Scripps research community. He has led and contributed to over 30 peer-reviewed research publications and book chapters in some of the top medical journals. He also completed a research fellowship in cancer care innovation and is always looking for ways to bring innovation to the clinic for his patients and colleagues.

He continues to be very active in the national radiation oncology community through his involvement in the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) and the American College of Radiology (ACR).

In his free time, Dr. Mesko enjoys spending time outside and traveling with his family. He regularly plays tennis, is an avid car enthusiast, and enjoys photography and watching sports.
