Physician says diabetes prevention efforts contributed to decline

Athena Philis-Tsimikas, MD, an endocrinologist and corporate vice president of the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute, recently discussed a federal report showing a decline in the number of new diabetes cases with KUSI.

Dr. Tsimikas said diabetes cases fell even as obesity rates rose due to stronger diabetes prevention efforts and changes in the way the disease is diagnosed. Scripps offers a diabetes prevention program that is certified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
