Participate in events for cancer patients, cancer survivors and more

National Cancer Survivors Day represents more than the single date of June 2. At Scripps Cancer Center, we believe it’s a month-long opportunity to celebrate hope by recognizing our nation’s cancer survivors and those living with cancer to help them focus on living life well.

And it’s a time to acknowledge the medical professionals dedicated to cancer treatment, research and support services.

We also know how important it is to acknowledge cancer’s effect on everyone’s needs — emotional, mental and physical — and the support that’s necessary to balance and restore wellbeing.

That’s why throughout June we invite cancer survivors, cancer patients, their families and caregivers to join us for one or more of our webinars, classes and/or support groups.

We look forward to spending this special time with you — together.

Cancer Survivors Day – June events

Learn about foods to include in your diet that decrease the risk of cancer recurrence or second primary cancers, improve energy levels and lower the risk of chronic diseases. Discover which foods have the greatest benefits and why, and how to incorporate them in a healthy lifestyle.

Learn about food flexibility for optimal nutrition prior to and during cancer treatment, as well as signs and symptoms related to treatment. Attendees will learn about optimal hydration and nutrition, including the importance of adequate protein and calories.

Modern-day research has proven what our ancestors knew intuitively: that music and body movement possess therapeutic benefits. Utilizing a combination of these modalities, this class provides a 60-minute restorative yoga and sound therapy experience that focuses on relaxation and rejuvenation. Participants can choose to rest comfortably, or gently move through simple stretches while receiving the healing benefits of sound from a variety of instruments: singing bowls, chimes, drums and gongs. Cushioned mats and bolster cushions are available for use. We recommend participants bring a yoga blanket or light covering.

Healthy Bones Exercise Class - Multiple dates and locations

This exercise program includes exercises that target the body’s larger muscle groups to improve strength, balance and flexibility. Minimize bone loss and promote bone health by utilizing weights, bands and yoga postures. The program is designed to build stronger bones, improve balance and promote functional strength and fitness. This class takes place on the campus of Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego at the Woltman Family College Building.

Led by physical therapists with an advanced certification in lymphedema, this class covers the function of the lymphatic system, signs and symptoms of lymphedema and treatment options. The instructor will also provide tips for managing side effects, preventing infection and strengthening range of motion. Family members, support or caregivers are invited to attend.
