San Diego’s Longest Established Hospital

Founded in 1890 by the Sisters of Mercy, Scripps Mercy Hospital is San Diego’s longest established hospital, the only Catholic medical center and the largest teaching hospital in the region — with campuses in San Diego and Chula Vista.

Together they comprise the largest hospital in San Diego County and one of the largest in California. Providing outstanding care at two locations allows us to serve San Diego and the South Bay with an extended network of primary care and specialized physicians.

As a major teaching hospital, Scripps Mercy Hospital provides a primary site for the clinical education of more than 70 medical residents per year, and its Mercy Clinic provides health care for more than 30,000 people who are uninsured or underinsured.

Mercy Style of Care

Our commitment to quality patient care is based on the ethical and cultural precepts of the Catholic tradition, which inspire the role of spirituality in the healing process and the humanistic treatment we give to our patients and staff.

To us, exceptional patient service is known as the “Mercy Style of Care.” Patients and their loved ones talk about a distinctive feeling at Scripps Mercy, something that distinguishes our hospital from other health care facilities. We believe that the mind, body and spirit each play an integral part in the healing process, and we care for our patients with that philosophy in mind.
